Automobiles (or cars) are one of the most important inventions of the modern world. They are used all over the world to transport people from place to place. They have also changed the way we live and work. Automobiles are a great mode of transportation but they have some disadvantages such as traffic and automobile accidents. Automobiles also cause pollution by releasing toxic chemicals into the air and water. They are also a major source of greenhouse gases which contribute to global warming.
The scientific and technological building blocks of the automobile date back several hundred years. The first motor cars were powered by steam, electricity or gasoline. Steam and electric power generated the highest speeds, but they were difficult to start and had limited ranges. Gasoline engines were much easier to start and provided greater range than either steam or electricity. They were also relatively inexpensive. The most important advance came from the industrialist Henry Ford who pioneered mass production techniques using an assembly line. His Model T was a huge success and brought the automobile within reach of most Americans.
Today, there are over 5 – 59 million different kinds of automobiles in the world and they are the most popular form of passenger transportation. They are usually driven by human beings but sometimes they are controlled by computer programs. One day cars will be able to drive themselves without a driver.
Automobiles are good for everyday transportation but they can also be a dangerous way to travel because of their speed and size. They can cause injuries to pedestrians and passengers when they are driven recklessly or by drunk drivers.
