Whether it’s a road trip to an unexplored destination or a quick dash for the last bowl of ice cream, there is nothing like having your own vehicle to get you where you need to go. Automobiles (or cars) are the primary mode of transportation for millions of people around the world.
Automobiles are complicated machines with multiple systems that work together to move the car and make it comfortable for passengers. Every automobile is powered by an engine that uses fuel—gasoline, diesel or kerosene—to generate power that turns the wheels and electricity to light and other systems.
There are many reasons to own an automobile, including the fact that driving is much faster and more convenient than walking or riding a bicycle. It also opens up new job opportunities and places for you to live. The ability to cover long distances means you have more freedom to travel and see friends and family.
But there are downsides to the automobile, too. Millions of people die in traffic accidents every year, and automobile emissions contribute to air pollution. Public transportation is a more environmentally friendly and cheaper alternative to the private automobile. Plus, it’s often much quicker than driving an automobile in a busy city.
