Entertaiment is any form of recreation, leisure activity, amusement or diversion that affords pleasure or gratification. It provides an escape from everyday reality and gives people a chance to indulge in fantasies, dreams and other more enjoyable experiences. It often includes a sense of drama or adventure, but can also provide relaxation and diversion, such as doing a crossword puzzle or watching TV. It is a major part of the culture of many societies and can be a large component of the economy. The word comes from the Latin intertenere, with the prefix inter meaning “inside” and tenere, with the Indo-European root ten, meaning “to stretch.”
