An automobile is a self-propelled vehicle used for transportation of passengers and cargo. The branches of engineering that deal with the manufacture and technologies related to automobiles are known as Automobiles Engineering. Automobiles are an important pillar of the modern world. Our lives would be almost unimaginable without cars. They provide us with freedom and ease of travel. They enable us to reach faraway places faster than a person could travel on foot or by a horse.

The first modern motorcars were perfected in Germany and France toward the end of the nineteenth century by men such as Gottlieb Wilhelm Daimler, Karl Benz, and Nicolaus Otto. During its initial test run, however, the internal combustion engine that they fitted to a four-wheeled carriage was destroyed by the explosion of its tank hose. Edouard Delamare-Deboutteville and Leon Malandin patented a more successful model in 1884, but they failed to build it into a practical vehicle.

American companies dominated the industry in the early twentieth century, mainly because of Henry Ford’s innovations in industrial manufacturing techniques. His assembly line production allowed him to lower the price of his Model T until it was affordable for most middle-class families. He also pushed for standardization of parts and production technology to ensure that the car would continue to improve rapidly in design and speed.

Having your own automobile enables you to reach places much faster than if you were walking, taking a taxi or riding in a bus. You are also able to cover much greater distances than if you were living in the same city as your workplace. This gives you the possibility of a wider variety of work opportunities and allows you to expand your social circle to include people from all around the country.
