Entertaiment is an uncountable noun meaning something affording pleasure, diversion or amusement: The equestrian performance was a great entertainment.
A person’s entertainment can be a source of personal and social growth, such as the way in which children’s play mimics adult activities (such as watching performances on television); prepares them for parental responsibilities or group activity (with dolls, pets and group games); or develops skills needed for activities such as sports, music or art (by playing marbles, puzzles or group games). Some familiar forms of entertainment have shown a remarkable capacity to cross over different media: the story of Scheherazade from Persian professional storytelling tradition has been adapted into orchestral works by Rimsky-Korsakov, Ravel and Szymanowski; as films by directors Pasolini and David Lynch; and as innovative video games by designers like Richard Wiley.
