Entertaiment combines the Medieval Latin inter tenere, meaning “to hold inside,” with the Indo-European root ten. It has also a sense of social backstabbing and murder, and many entertainments hit the themes that our brains were evolved to deeply react to.
Entertaiment can be anything that provides pleasure, enjoyment, or relaxation, such as watching movies or television, listening to music, playing musical instruments, sports and games, reading novels, short stories, or poetry, or creating or appreciating visual art. It can also be a person or event that gives a sense of excitement or elation. A fashionable society member who is fond of social activities and entertainments is a socialite.
