Entertaiment, from Middle French entretenement, means to keep someone inside, but it has since come to suggest the idea of amusement. Entertainment can be personal—music exchanged with friends, a banquet adapted for two, an intimate play or conversation—or it can be large-scale, from a theatrical performance to a global TV broadcast. Some activities that were necessary skills for survival, such as archery or fencing, have developed into sport and even professions for those who practice them, while still serving as entertainment for audiences.
